Welcome to Margaret River
Each year some 500 000 visitors embrace the diversity of this surfing, wine growing mecca which, 30 years ago, comprised little more than struggling dairy farms.
Today the Augusta Margaret River region is enriched with a tapestry of culture, characters and activities.
While black and white dairy cows still graze serenely alongside kangaroos, Margaret River is now the scene of international concerts, glamorous wineries, adrenalin-based adventure sports, world class art and gourmet food.
Farmers who come to town now enjoy a cappuccino. They walk the streets amid the relaxed, but vibrant, atmosphere of different cultures and languages.
Behind the development of what has been one of Australia’s great tourism success stories, the AMRTA has been instrumental in ensuring the environmental impact of tourism into this pristine region is minimal.
Today the Association is made up of 465 tourism operators ranging from B & Bs to luxury resorts, tour companies, artisans, wineries, confectionery outlets, animal exhibitions and specialist shops.
It’s this diversity which has been tantamount in putting the Margaret River region on the map. Its landscape alone shows off this diversity with its rich coastal heath and awe inspiring karri forests. Along the coast, rock formations change from large strewn granite pebbles smoothed by the ocean to jagged limestone cliffs. Barefooted surfers relax alongside sophisticates in what can only be described as an intriguing mix of life.
