Description
Yallingup Galleries is excited to showcase the work of acclaimed artists Roslyn Hamdorf and Shabbi in a new exhibition inspired by Western Australia’s iconic landscapes and natural rock formations.
Opening on Saturday, 14 December at 5 pm, the event will feature wine and grazing platters provided by Vallée du Venom. All are welcome to join us in celebrating this remarkable showcase.
Roslyn Hamdorf captures WA’s rugged landscapes with textured acrylic paintings that explore themes of balance, tension, and erosion. Her process involves layering paint and using a spatula to apply and remove it, creating intricate textures that mimic the natural grains of sand and rock. Roslyn’s approach allows viewers to experience a close-up of the landscape’s essence, even as she “breaks down landscapes into rocks and sand,” hoping to evoke a connection to place.
Shabbi’s ceramic sculptures complement Roslyn’s work by bringing the WA landscape into three dimensions. Inspired by a ceramics course years ago, Shabbi’s passion for clay shines through in her hand-built pieces, which celebrate rock pools, pebbles, and bushland. Using gritty clay coils and finishing with materials like seaweed, copper wire, and salt-laden bandages, Shabbi fires each piece in a saggar or aluminium foil wrapping to achieve earthy, organic finishes that reflect WA’s natural textures.
The pairing of Roslyn’s 2D canvases with Shabbi’s 3D ceramics offers a unique duality, inviting visitors to explore WA’s landscapes in both painting and sculpture. The shared focus on natural textures and materials creates a seamless dialogue between the two art forms, each inspired by the landscapes that shape the region.
Visit Yallingup Galleries from 14–22 December to experience this tribute to WA’s landscapes. Celebrate Western Australia’s natural heritage through art that reflects the beauty of our unique environment.
