Gala: Stories that quilts tell… have you ever stopped to listen?

calendar
Sunday, 13th April 2025 - 9:30am to 3:30am

Description

For millennia, people have gathered to create; weaving, sewing and painting everyday objects while sharing stories and supporting each other and their communities.

“Quilts are my artform. I discovered my creativity through quilting”

– Maureen Munro.

Quilts tell stories of love, pain, grief, laughter and joy. They record the good times, and the struggles of the hard times. Quilts celebrate life events and build memories, create play and wonder and speak without words. Quilts can be both functional and an expression of our inner self and our creative endeavour. The needle and thread, in hand or machine, becomes the pencil and paintbrush. The artist’s tools.

During the exhibition, you’re invited to:

  • Come and see the quilts. Every quilt is accompanied by a story, written by the maker.
  • “Meet the Artist” walk and talk on Mondays at 11.15am following Young@HEART.
  • Gathering of Quilters – Wednesdays 26 March, 9 April: 1pm to 3pm. Meet, chat, sew.
  • Gala Day on Sunday 13th April including talks from Erin Statz (Mindful Margaret River) and Br Olly Pickett, Australian Senior of the Year (Wheelchairs for Kids).
  • See demonstrations of hand sewing techniques for patchwork at Gatherings of Quilters’ and the Gala Day.
  • Come and chat with Maureen Munro (11am to 2pm weekdays) while she makes a quilt on her treadle machine.

Margaret River HEART – Nala Bardip Mia are excited to be working with Mindful Margaret River to create opportunities to share the stories and create discussion about the health benefits of quilting for both the maker and the recipient.

  • March 21-April 15. Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm
  • Exhibition Launch: Friday, March 21, 2025, 6-8pm
  • Gala Day: Sunday, April 13, 9.30am-3.30pm
