Reconciliation Week Walk in Busselton

calendar
Friday, 30th May 2025 - 10:00am to 12:00pm

Description

A local highlight of National Reconciliation Week ( 27 May to 3 June) is Busselton’s Reconciliation Walk.

Community members are invited to join the City of Busselton, school children, local groups and businesses in its fourth annual Walk, taking place on Friday, 30 May at 10am.

The Busselton Reconciliation Walk will start at the Merenj Boodja Bush Garden (corner of Queen Street and Marine Terrace Busselton). Following official speeches the Walk, led by Wadandi Elder Gloria Hill, will head to the Busselton Foreshore, finishing at the Youth and Community Activities Building (YCAB).

A light lunch and activities following the walk will be provided by local Aboriginal-owned business, Pindari.

About 200 Elders, community members, school students, community groups and businesses are expected to participate in this year’s Walk. It provides an opportunity for local community members to unite with Aboriginal community members and hear stories about Culture.

This year’s Reconciliation Week theme is “Bridging Now to Next” and reflects the ongoing connection between the past, present and future. It urges people to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

In 1996, the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched Australia’s first National Reconciliation Week. In 2001, Reconciliation Australia was established to continue to provide national leadership on reconciliation. In the same year, approximately 300,000 people walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of National Reconciliation Week and subsequently, across bridges in cities and towns to show their support for reconciliation.

Today, National Reconciliation Week is celebrated in workplaces, schools and early learning services, community organisations and groups, as well as by individuals Australia-wide.
