The Hugh Mann Project is a contemporary art exhibition which engages the creative processes of video, painting, photography and sculpture, set in the Margaret River coastal region. The project examines human otherness in an environmental fantasy that includes sculptural figures (of local people) superimposed into visual narratives, that play with fanciful notions of human ascension, the coastal Gothic, human otherness and anthropomorphism.

For instance, surfers could be seen in a different context to other people the moment they shed their clothes and slide into a wetsuit (second skin). They immediately become another version of themselves, creating a change of identity, by becoming ‘anthropomorphic’ part animal, part surf rider, in a kind of metamorphosis that has physical and visual connotations. This could lead one to think that people adorned in wetsuits take on physical and behavioural traits of something other than themselves.

Human ‘otherness’ could also be interpreted as other worldly or separate from the norm, a kind of silhouette of the shadow, something that is considered alternative. The sculptures themselves are created from photographic images of surfers in wetsuits providing further separation of a persons identity allowing them to be re-imagined in oceanic landscapes.

Displayed at the Margaret River HEART until 4th of August, open Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm.
