The Margaret River

Star 4.6 (18 Google reviews)

The Margaret River, the waterway for which the town and region were named, is a relatively short river at only 60kms in length, but it provides endless experiences for the adventure seeking traveller, and is the beating heart of this glorious coastline.
Whether surfing at the river mouth, SUPing or hiking in the peaceful backcountry upstream, mountain biking along the banks, or picnicking at the weir behind town, there is absolutely something and some way for everyone to get out amongst nature and enjoy the beauty of the river.

The Margaret River collects its water from State forest in the north-western part of the Blackwood Plateau. Then, draining westward through undulating agricultural land and cutting through the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, it snakes downstream towards the ocean at Prevelly. The river usually breaks through to the ocean after the good winter rains, but during the summer months the river mouth is closed off from the roaring Indian Ocean by a large sandbank stretching across the bay.

Holidaying close by the owners of this bnb suggested this walk. I initially was worried that every one would have their dogs off leash. However i was pleasantly surprised. Some did but as soon as they saw another dog they quickly put them back on until we passed. Made for this lovely walk to be so much more relaxing. Friendly locals and lovely scenery. Was a great way to start our morning. Highly recommend

Nice bridge across the river, the fish ladder is cool, and there’s lots of birds around

A really picturesque spot with a gorgeous walk leading up to it from the Rotary park.
