Pro surfers on why they heart the Margaret River Region

Each year in April, the world’s best surfers descend upon the Margaret River Region to compete in the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. They seem to stick around, arriving early and often staying on after they are knocked out of the competition, so we figured they must like the place. Here’s what some of them have to say about our backyard.

Kelly Slater (USA)

“The wineries, my girl has a great time when we go to Margaret River. And the food, we’ve had great food there – and the venison, we went to that venison farm, wow – I really like it there.”

Mick Fanning (Australia)

“Obviously the wineries, the waves, but the one thing I really like is how quiet it is. I really like quiet places.”

Joel Parkinson (Australia)

“The adventure of it, driving to the waves and visiting all the places, I like the elements you know, getting hit by a cold front. And the wineries, beer and food – it’s just a great place.”

Stephanie Gilmore (Australia)

“I love Margaret River because it’s like going on a true Australian adventure. I love the stunning cliffs, beaches, the vineyards and the beautiful local artisans who make everything from fresh breads to lavender body products. The wineries exceeded all my expectations, especially the lesser-known smaller spots that make you feel like you’re walking into a scene from a children’s storybook.

Matt Wilkinson (Australia)

“It’s sick over there! I love the chocolate factory, it’s pretty deadly, and surrounded by wineries and breweries, you can’t go wrong. It’s a great place.”

Freddy Patacchia Jnr (Hawaii)

“I love the early mornings in Margaret River – going to any cafe and have breakfast and coffee. I like to go for a morning surf before the sun even comes up, getting a little bit scared thinking there’s some big fish out there, and then coming in from a great little surf and warming up with a good coffee, scrambled eggs and bacon, yep that’s my favourite part about Margaret River.”

Laura Enever (Australia)

“The landscape, the beautiful beaches – it’s amazing there and so different to the East Coast. I like just to take it all in.”

Kolohe Andino (USA)

“The things I like about Margaret River besides the waves are the dirt roads to the waves – feels like an Indiana Jones style adventure.”

Nat Young (USA)

“I just like how Margaret River is not crowded, you can go explore and get away from people and busy places. That’s what I like.”

Jeremy Flores (France)

“I like the wineries and the people. The people are really nice and welcoming.”

Jadson Andre (Brazil)

“I like the kangaroos!”
