The local and limited-release beers you have to try before summer's out.
Nothing sings the flavour of summertime more than a crisp cold beer. But sometimes, actually deciding what to drink is the most difficult part of this process. So, we’ve taken the liberty of compiling this definitive summer beer guide, to help you spend less time deciding, and more time drinking. There’s one for every occasion!
Hazy Boy IPA | Eagle Bay Brewing Co.
This cloudy ale is not for the faint of heart.
Best enjoyed by those who like to live on the edge, the Eagle Bay Brewing Co.’s latest summer brew comes in a long-neck bottle, and at 7.8 per cent ABV, each 640ml king-brown packs a whopping four standard drinks.
With a wonderfully cloudy character and aromas of pineapple, lemon zest, and candied orange, this is perfect for sipping with friends on hot summer arvos down at the beach, or over robust discussions on sultry nights on the porch of your mate’s place.
This Single Series beer is limited edition, and only 1000 litres of this delicious amber nectar have been brewed, so get it while it lasts.
The beer’s tropical label design, by Margaret River artist Chloe Wilder, pays tribute to its succulent and summery nature. This is also the first batch of beer that brewer, Keegan Steinbacher, has lead the charge on, and it’s an audacious debut to say the least.
“This was my first crack going solo, where normally I’m working closely with our Head Brewer Nick d’Espeissis,” explained Steinbacher. “It was great to experiment with some mid ferment dry hopping and using lots of high protein malts like wheat and oats, to give the beer its hazy look. I’m stoked with how it all turned out. Hazy, high ABV beers have been really popular with beer lovers recently, so it’s nice to be able to put our own take on that.”
Eagle Bay Brewing Co have also marked the release with t-shirts featuring Wilder’s Hazy Boy artwork. Just like the brew, they’re ultra-limited, so get your hands on them while they last. Tees and bottles available now, but not for long, exclusively at EBBCo’s Restaurant and Off-License in Dunsborough, or online.
Jungle Juice & Beach Break Summer Ale | Cheeky Monkey Brewery
Two of Cheeky Monkey’s finest are also fine summer drinking: the Jungle Juice and the Beachbreak Summer Ale.
The Jungle Juice was the final beer that acclaimed brewer, Ross Terlick, made with Cheeky Monkey before he set off to new pastures. So, it’s only appropriate that he crafted something celebratory, jovial, and dancing with festive vibes.
Flavours of fruity mango, peach, passionfruit, and sweet orange give way to a rising bitterness grounds the second half of the palate with a boozy warmth and firm-for-style dryness guiding things to a short finish. In other words, it’s a party in your mouth.
Cheeky Monkey’s Beach Break Summer Ale rose out of a collaboration with Bathers Beach House in Fremantle. As the name suggests, it’s white, light, and crispy clean; and a perfect lunch time companion. It’s always beer o’clock somewhere!
You’ll find these cans of Cheeky Monkey brews at all good bottle-shops, but they’re best enjoyed at the Brewery itself, on Caves Road in Wilyabrup, just north of Cullen Road.
Session Ale | Bootleg Brewery
Bootleg Brewery’s Session Ale is the beer for any occasion.
It’s light bodied, dry hopped, and sings with tropical citrus notes and a chorus of summertime.
Sip it from the bottle out on the boat or about the barbeque. Even better, why not enjoy a frosty glass fresh at the brewery, which offers live music every weekend. Could Sunday afternoons get any better?
Lightsign Summer Ale | Cowaramup Brewing Company
Gold, fruity, and medium bodied, with a tang of spice to finish, the Lightsign Summer Ale goes down a treat on any warm afternoon.
It’s brewed out by the dairy farms on the rural pastures behind Cowaramup, at the family owned Cowaramup Brewing Company‘s delightfully rustic digs.
Take a behind-the-scenes-brewery tour and learn of the love and craftsmanship that goes into every drop. Or sip on a frosty glass of the stuff as you watch the next batch being created through the brewery viewing windows. It doesn’t get much fresher than this!
Honest Ale | Black Brewing Co.
Out on the boat, after a hard day’s yakka, or as a post-surf frothy, keep this in the arsenal for every honest occasion.
Honest Ale is a true West Australian craft beer. It’s ‘inspired the wild ones who live between the desert and the sea’, and was brewed by Black Brewing Co. in collaboration with WA surfing legends Taj Burrow, Dino Adrian, and Jay Davies.
Every sip is lightly hopped with a tropical tasting flavour and aroma, and even has a drop of fresh Yallingup seawater to leave a lengthy palate.
Enjoy as a ‘red lead’ from the can, or on tap at the Caves Road Collective, home of Black Brewing Co.
South West Sour – Colonial Brewing Co.
Life in Margaret River is uncomplicated, and so is the philosophy of the Colonial Brewing Co.
They pride themselves on the beauty of simplicity, and their South West Sour embodies everything that life should be. This warm weather seasonal is brewed at their Cowaramup brewery, and offers a light body, just the right amount of fruitiness and a vibrant tropical aroma. This golden sour is light, refreshing, and begging to be drunk in the early afternoon.
Pineapple Sour | The Beerfarm
A light, summery, smashable Berlinner Weisse style beer, this is a summer cocktail in a generous 500ml can.
Recently released from the legends at The Beerfarm for your summer pleasure, the Pineapple Sour is pungent with tropical and lemony fruit characters, and has a lovely clean refreshing acidity. It’s moorish, crushable, and chock full of pineapple-y goodness. It’s worth buying just for the can art, which features caricatures in the style of a $50 note. Send this one straight to the pool room.
You can buy it in the can from any good bottle shop or on tap at the brewery, where they have turned a hay shed into a tavern, and they raise cattle on spent grain from the brewing process.
