The last days of autumn with literary greats, surfing celebs and fitness extremes.

Recent weather events have left us all slightly confused; autumn kicked in, then all of a sudden winter was here, then it was back to warm sunny days that wouldn’t have been out of place mid-summer.

And now it’s back to autumn. May is a perfect month for a getaway down south, filled with the last of the autumn colours, the vines golden and the fireplaces lit. It’s a favourite time for lovers of the arts; with Open Studios, the Readers and Writers Festival and Jazz By The Bay ensuring a feast for all senses.

As an added bonus, the kids are back at school and the crowds have departed so you can relax and take your time. There’s no rush; take a leisurely drive and rediscover the magic of the Margaret River Region.

Open Studios | 27 April – 12 May

Don’t miss your chance to peer into the working lives and studios of some of the region’s busiest artists with Open Studios. There are 12 days left in May for you to watch more than 130 local artists at work and learn about their creative practices. The largest event of its kind in Australia, it’s also free.

Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival At Voyager Estate | 3-5 May

A favourite date in the diary each year for lovers of all things literary. This year’s theme for the Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival is ‘Wild, Weird and Wonderful’.  A storytelling spectacular, the festival hub is situated at Voyager Estate with a encompassing Q and A sessions, panel discussions, book signings, interviews, workshops, lunches and more. Get in quick – tickets sell out fast, especially with headliners such as Germaine Greer and Michael Leunig.

Busselton Festival of Triathlon | 3-5  May

The Busselton Festival of Triathlon has something for everyone – whether you are a spectator, dipping your toes in to compete for the first time, or a downright pro. While the SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 remains the centre of the event, there is plenty more on offer for fitness fanatics. There are distances to suit all ages, from 7-70, and lots of free activities if you simply need a bit of inspiration to get out there training for next year’s race.

Margaret River Ultra Marathon | 4-5 May

It’s a weekend to get out into the great outdoors. The Margaret River Ultra Marathon is another premier sporting event to catch early this May. 80km of spectacular trail running is in store for those competing either solo or in teams. Spectators can take their pick of picturesque viewpoints to cheer them on – from ocean views to forest canopies. This race is a long one, but it’s chock full of variety.

Groovin The Moo Bunbury | 11 May

One of Australia’s best loved music festivals, Bunbury is one of just six stops for Groovin The Moo. The diverse line up has something for everyone, from Jack River and Haiku Hands through to Hilltop Hoods, Hermitude and Regurgitator. Get your dancing pants ready, this is the time to break out the moves.

Mother’s Day High Tea Buffet At Pullman Bunker Bay | 12 May

Open Day with Dan White At Boogaloo Surf & Yoga | 12 May

Not heard of Boogaloo Surf and Yoga? That might be because this little campsite is a bit left of centre: it’s an eco surf and yoga campsite situated in Augusta. Along with beautiful bell tents and the usual camping set up, there is also a shed where surf and skateboards are hand crafted by Paul and a yurt for healing and yoga sessions from Toni. Pop a picnic rug on the lawn, crack open a beer and enjoy the chilled out vibes for their open day, with live music from Dan White. You can even stay the night!

Banff Mountain Film Festival At Margaret River HEART | 20 May

The Banff Mount Film Festival is the world’s most prestigious mountain film festival and now in its 43rd year. Thanks to the facilities at the new Margaret River HEART, this is the chance for those of us that like to keep to the safety ropes to enjoy the thrill seeking tendencies of the world’s greatest filmmakers.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow At Margaret River HEART | 25 May

For over 20 years the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow has been bringing belly laughs around the country. Get ready for some rip snorting as the party comes to town, with some of the nation’s funniest comedians. Why go to the stages of Melbourne, when the top acts come here to Margaret River? Plus, we have better wine in the interval.

Nature Conservation At Passel Estate | 30 May

Join Passel Estate owners Barry and Wendy, along with friends and volunteers, as over 500 native tube stocks are planted to help local wildlife at their Nature Conservation Day. The estate is home to a number of ringtail possums, who have been transferred to the safety of the carefully preserved bushland. Passel Estate works closely with a number of wildlife organisations to help care for and ensure the protection of these precious animals. Volunteers will be rewarded with a light lunch and a glass of wine, and perhaps even a sighting of some newly released possums If they are feeling like joining in the fun!

If you fancy seeing some of the world’s top athletes up close and personal, then book your accommodation early. The 12-day period which covers the Margaret River Surf Pro is one of the busiest for surfers, as they have a chance to catch 50 of the world’s top ranked competitors in the World Surf League. Grab a coffee and get down to Surfers Point early; you’ll be gutted if you miss the action on THAT wave.

Jazz By The Bay | 31 May – 3 June

Ever heard jazz in a cave? Well, the internationally renowned music festival  Jazz By The Bay is your chance if not. Featuring local, national and international guest acts; performance locations are as diverse as the performances, and include wineries, town halls, restaurants, lighthouses and yes, even caves. Ticketed events sell out quickly, but there are also plenty of free events suitable for all ages.
