Events worth planning your trip around

Just in case you need a good excuse to plan a trip down south this summer, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite summer events that are perfect to revolve your plans around. Sight-see during the day and take in a concert at night, cheer on competitors from the spectator stands or spend a whole weekend under a circus tent. It’s all right here in the Margaret River region.

Leeuwin Family Concert: Bernard Fanning
January 7th

Each year Leeuwin stages a series of spectacular alfresco concerts in the picturesque grounds of the estate. This year, one of Australia’s most loved musicians, Bernard Fanning, will return for the winery’s renown 2017 Family Concert. Bernard and his band will be celebrating the release of their new album ‘Civil Dusk’ in the stunning surrounds of Leeuwin Estate and will also bring to life his string of hits from the past two decades. Bring your family and a picnic and enjoy a laid-back casual evening of summertime alfresco music on the lawns.

WA Circus Festival
January 27th – 29th

The Western Australian Circus Festival is a 3 day event held every January in Karridale, showcasing international and Australian circus performers, bands and DJs. Set in a spectacular and enthralling environment of big tops and outdoor venues, there is circus, comedy, cabaret and music from midday until midnight.

Attracting over 100 performers from around the world, it is a unique blend of world class acts set in a magical circus environment in the heart of the Margaret River region. This festival is one of the few events that encompasses all ages and all genres of life. Enjoy the circus workshops and markets stalls, and camp on-site over the weekend.

City of Busselton Triathlon
Sunday, January 29th

Approximately 1000 participants and another 2000 spectators are expected to attend this year’s City of Busselton Triathlon. This is the State Standard Distance Championships and a qualifying event for the Rotterdam Age Group World Triathlon Championships. But the event is by no means only for elite and regular triathletes! Also included is an Enticer Event with shorter distances for adults, the Tadpoles category for 7-11 year olds (un-timed) and even now a duathlon for those that don’t enjoy swimming!

Chinese New Year in the Margaret River region
January 31

Welcome the year of the Rooster in Your Margaret River Region!

Enjoy a special eight course Golden Degustation menu at Leeuwin Estate. This limited offer will be available from 21st January until 5th February 2017 and will feature Chinese New Year inspired entrees, mains and desserts using fresh, seasonal produce. Alternatively, create your own menu by choosing from the chef’s featured entrées, mains and orange inspired dessert courses. Howard Park Winery celebrates Chinese New Year every year in their cellar door, as it makes up an important part of the Burch family’s cultural heritage. Owner Amy Burch was born in Singapore and is of Chinese descent. Her influence can be noted everywhere within their operation, from the Feng Shui architectural design of the Cellar Door, through to the winged serpent entwined around the tree on the Howard Park wine labels. (Amy is the year of the dragon!). As part of the celebration, they give away Ang Pows to visitors where they can win chocolate coins, an orange or a bottle of red wine – all symbols of good luck.


South West Craft Beer Festival
Saturday, February 11th

The South West Craft Beer Festival returns on the 11th of February 2017, and is the perfect opportunity to see what the best of the South West brewers have to offer. The festival will showcase more than 60 refreshing local brews, including an assortment of one-off and limited edition beers. Brewers and beer lovers gather together at the Old Broadwater Farm to sample these fine brews, along with enticing cuisine and groovy local beats. And for those who aren’t so beer-orientated, never fear, you’re not forgotten – there are heaps of local wines and craft ciders to try out as well!

Busselton Jetty Swim

Busselton Jetty Swim
February 11th & 12th

The Busselton Jetty Swim is a premier ocean swim around the iconic Busselton Jetty in the south west of Western Australia. Since 1996, the Busselton Jetty Swim has grown from a local event to an internationally recognized event attracting in excess of 2000 competitors!

The Busselton Jetty Swim 2017 event will take place over 2 days with entertainment, activities and family-friendly fun, with the competitive swim taking place on the morning of Sunday 12th February 2017.

Drug Aware Margaret River Pro
March 28th – April 8th

Each year the top 36 ranked male and top 18 ranked female surfers in the world descend upon the region to surf its world-class waves in the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. The event sees thousands of spectators flock to Surfers Point in Prevelly to watch the world’s best surfers take on the famous Margaret River Mainbreak and the fearsome Box. The Margaret River Pro has been awarded World Championship Tour status in part thanks to the fact that it offers some of the best surfing conditions in the world.

This is a free event, so head on down to Surfer’s Point and check it out!

The Festival of Love
April 2nd

The Festival of Love is a weekend of endless inspiration. It is a festival style wedding event, just for you and your betrothed, family and friends. Sip sparkling wine while listening to live music and mingle with the creative talent, industry professionals and style masters in the pin-drop heart of the region.
