Wine voices – Brendan Carr, Winemaker, Xanadu Wines

“I’ve done so many vintages around the world travelling around North America, South America, Europe, New Zealand, all these places and really it’s a good way to go travelling. You meet all the local crew, drink the local booze, eat the local food, learn all the local swear words. There’s a purpose to travel, a fortunate offshoot to starting this whole career.”

“When I was 17 I just decided that winemaking was a really good excuse to distract my parents while I lived in their house in Yallingup and went surfing. So it was sort of a bit of a lifestyle choice for me in the sense that I love the area; it’s pretty close to my heart, down here. All my buddies are down here now. Yeah it’s just one of those places that it’s hard to leave.”

“In Margaret River, you don’t get too tribal. If someone were to win a wine award, you know hopefully it’s yourself but if not yourself it’s someone else from Margaret River and if not someone else from Margaret River, it’s a case of Australia getting on the map if it’s an international award.”
