Wine voices – Tim Lovett, Senior Winemaker, Leeuwin Estate

“I packed up the car and moved from the Yarra to Margaret River. I’d never been here before but I just knew that I wanted to be here making the best Chardonnay possible. Obviously Margaret River is based upon flagship benchmarks, which varietally are Chardonnay and Cabernet.”

“I was having a bite to eat with some winemaker friends last night. And you know we’re all allies here. We’re all about helping the region. We have such a beautiful resource and that is environmental. Where we stand here, we’re six kilometres from the Indian Ocean, we’re thirty kilometres from the Southern Ocean, we have this beautiful Mediterranean climate, along with a Maritime influence. But this is still in my opinion a hidden wine region in terms of its profile.”

“The top echelon is considered to be the old world, within France. But with the region now celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, we have little restriction in terms of the varietals that we can grow here. To produce those varietals on a world qualitative spec, to be positioned and compared, is pretty special. We take our wines to Burgundy and we go into producers, into their Domaines or we take them to Bordeaux and the Châteaus; they’re surprised about firstly the personality of each of the varietals, the vibrancy and the freshness. and the acidity that runs through. They have this perfume, this fragrance about them, but they have purity and elegance of fruit.”
