Young @ HEART – Jack Barrett & Heather Locke

calendar
Monday, 7th August 2023 - 10:00am to 11:00am

Description

Jack Barrett developed an interest in Australian history from early on.

This talk is aimed at outlining the stages in Augusta Margaret River’s development, what peoples’ lives were like then, and a framework to assist understanding the extent that climate changes and development may clash in the future.

Jack trained in engineering, gained experience in major civil and mining endeavours, and undertook related research at both University of Melbourne and the CSIRO. His experience has ranged from small to large scale projects spread for southern Africa and Tasmania to a site within the Arctic circle, with both small and large open pit and underground endeavours, and community interactions being involved.

He is a member of a Australasian Mining History Association as well as the Margaret River historical group whilst undertaking research on Australia’s past prior to WW1.

Following Jack’s talk, Heather Locke will tell the wonderful story of the old upright piano.

About Young@HEART

The Young@HEART music program is held at Margaret River HEART – Nala Bardip Mia every Monday morning from 10am to 11am. The program does not run on public holidays or when there is another major event in the foyer.

The initiative was developed to safely encourage participation in the arts among older residents (over 60s) during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to high interest, the free performances have since been opened to people of all ages. Nonetheless, the senior demographic still makes up the majority of the audience.

Young@Heart is broadcast live on Radio Margaret River.
