Amato Vino are small-batch artisan winemakers with a winemaking philosophy termed ‘lo-fi’, embracing wild-ferments, minimal adjustments in the winery, gentle handling and employing traditional processes. Wines are typically unfined and unfiltered. An old-school approach yet with a modern flare for creativity and adventure. Amato Vino wines feature some eclectic Mediterranean grape varieties as well as the Margaret River classics. The tasting bar is located in the "The Witch and The Windmill" iconic building in Witchcliffe next door to WitchyBrews Espresso Bar. Perfect for grabbing coffee before or after a wine tasting.

Established in 2003 by owner/winemaker Brad Wehr, the labels and wine styles continue to grow, covering traditional Margaret River varietals through to some eclectic and unusual grape varieties and winemaking methods.  At Amato Vino, they are hands-on in terms of the grunt work, the care and guidance, but with a hands-off approach to the science of winemaking, using little or no inputs and employing traditional processes.

The Wines:

AMATO VINO ‘wilds’ The ‘wilds’ are home to emerging Mediterranean varieties, micro-batches, skinsy ferments and other eclectic wines. Featuring single vineyards, hand-picks, natural ferments – and incorporating minimal winemaking input and unconventional vessels for fermentation/maturation – this is the wild stuff. Packaged under labels bearing in-house artworks/designs/photography the ‘wilds’ include Teroldego, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Marsanne, Trousseau and Savagnin.

AMATO VINO ‘mantra’ The ‘mantra’ series is all about the classic Margies grape varieties, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignion, albeit with the Amato Vino lo-fi twist. The emphasis is on vineyard site & fruit purity, working with small fruit parcels to bring out the best from each site. Wild ferments (open and barrel), no adds, no fining and filtration are all central to the mix.

AMATO VINO ‘fusa’… the home for Amato blends (foo-za). Utilising emerging/alternative varieties as the basis for the blend,  seeking to create juicy, fresh drinkability, yet complex and alluring wines – packed with flavour but oh-so light on their feet. The Bianco and Rosso are fruit-forward, fleshy and flavoursome versions of some of their favourite grape varieties and are made for short to mid-term drinking. In this range is the super popular 'Tramonto' chilled red, perfect for chilling in the fridge... or on your porch!

Tasting Options:

Each week there are 5 Amato Vino wines on the tasting menu at the Witchcliffe cellar door, and this selection changes weekly. There are 2 tasting options on offer. The first is the more traditional "Tasting Flight" - an informative snapshot of all 5 wines on tasting (20ml taste of each) for $10 per person. The second option is the "Wine Paddle" - your choice of 3 of the 5 wines of the week (50ml sample of each), served all together on a specially designed stave paddle for you to enjoy at your own pace, with tasting notes provided for those who want to read along. This is $15 per person.

Food:

Enjoy a cheese plate while you sip on your vino! It's a perfect snack or light lunch between two.

Amato Vino was a refreshing change of pace during my Margaret River wine weekend. I really enjoyed the focus on alternative and emerging varieties, particularly the Italian and Mediterranean grapes, alongside more traditional Margaret River varieties. It’s always interesting to see how less conventional varieties adapt to a region and how winemakers choose to interpret them. Amato Vino offers a genuinely different perspective on what Margaret River can produce. A great stop for anyone who likes discovering wines outside the usual Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon conversation.

Unfortunately couldn’t stop for longer than a takeaway; staff are lovely, oozes character, little hidden gem well worth a look.

Fantastic wine and cute wine tasting area. The chilled red Tramonto is one of my favorite wines ever.
