15 minutes from Busselton, hidden away in a little farming community under the Whicher Range, is a place no one ever wants to leave.

The people who go there come back every year. It’s a place for parents who want to unwind away from the chaos of the tiny humans they love. It’s a sanctuary for couples who wish to escape the bustle of life. It’s where you go to ground and reconnect with yourself, and whoever is lucky enough to go with you.

This very real and very magical place is called Tree Chalets.

A home among the Rose Gum trees

In 2008 Fran Robinson and her husband Andrew planted 6,000 Rose Gum trees on a 90-acre property in the Margaret River Region. The couple were living in Perth at the time, so with the help of family, they road tripped back and forth to plant their very own forest.

These giant trees, with their silvery-white bark, now tower majestically over the chalets Fran and Andrew built. Fran says the chalets were designed so guests could enjoy the beauty of the trees, even when lounging inside.

“We’ve got a lot of glass in the chalets and it’s so stunning,” she says. “At night you can see the moonlight on all the trunks. In the morning you can see the sunrise through it.”

The chalets themselves were mostly fitted out using timber from the property. This sustainable mindset flows into every inch of the off-grid cabins.

“Everything we did when building the chalets was to minimise waste wherever possible,” she says. “At every point where we noticed waste being generated, we asked ourselves, ‘how can we solve this?’.”

Sustainable luxury is the best kind

Tree Chalets offers up a special kind of sustainable luxury; heated towel rails that run on a timer and are powered by the sun, an outdoor cast iron bath for soaking in rain water, and EV charging bays for anyone making the trip in an electric vehicle.

There’s also no single use packaging at the property, which Fran and Andrew worked hard to instate. Then there’s the bedding, which is made from luxe natural materials, with plush pillow top mattresses for ultimate comfort.

Fran says making sure guests get a good night’s rest is a big deal to her.

“We thought about what we’d want as parents when we go away,” she says. “You’ve maybe got one night or two nights away, so everything has to be perfect.”

Staying at Tree Chalets is a kind of “choose your own adventure” – if your mission is to relax as much as humanly possible, for some, that means sinking into a sumptuous sofa with a book and a glass of your favourite local wine.

For others, it’s soaking in a bathtub beneath the trees, taking in the serenity, or wandering the farm’s orchard, sampling fruit straight from the tree. Maybe it’s binge watching reruns of your favourite show, because Netflix and the wilderness is also peak relaxation.

Little touches make big comfort

Whatever your style is, Fran and Andrew have set the scene just right, and it all comes down to the little details. Like their breakfast hamper, which comes loaded with farm-fresh local produce such as bacon, eggs, freshly baked bread, churned butter and fruit from the orchard.

“We’re really proud of our breakfast,” Fran says. “We try to keep low food miles and give as much fresh produce from our property as we can.”

Fran and Andrew take pride in supporting local, resulting in many of the products in each chalet have been crafted by makers from the region.

“For example, the bath salts are from Celestial Salts,” says Fran. “We really love supporting smaller, local businesses to add value, and to add to the whole experience.”

Tip: Consider booking an ‘Exhale in the Gumtrees’ massage. Then, follow up with an incredible ‘Food Art Tree Chalets Grazing Board’, which can be purchased 48 hours before your stay begins.

Stay a while

Like many of the best things, Tree Chalets is the kind of place people find by word of mouth. This is probably what keeps it so special, and perhaps, just a little coveted.

“People tell us they have been searching for something like this for a long time,” Fran says. “When you get in your car on your drive home, you feel that much more exhilarated, rested and ready to face the world again. Rather than just a bed to put your head on for the night, it’s an overall experience.”
