TONEWOODS
Date: 28th December 2008 - 27th January 2009 2008

Venue: Margaret River Cultural Centre

An Exhibition of Instruments, Artworks & Photographs

Margaret River Luthier, Scott Wise has been building a wide variety of stringed instruments for 30 years this year. He uses the finest tonewoods from Australia and all corners of the earth. His friend, Perth artist, Virginia Ward has been using the accumulated offcuts of this exotic wood to make striking artworks. Some of these rare pieces of wood are soon to be reunited in a unique exhibition at Arts Margaret River’s new Foyer Gallery in the Cultural Centre on Wallcliffe Road. Fine instruments and artworks will be shown together, with limited edition photographs of the guitar building process taken by photographer Jean Paul Horré. The exhibition opens Sunday 28th December 2008 and is open weekdays from 10AM to 4PM until Tuesday 27th January . There will be a brief performance on exhibited instruments daily at 11 AM, and Scott will attend from 11AM until noon.

NATHAN KAYE
Date: Various Dates Throughout January 2009

Venue: Various Locations

Catch Nathan Kaye back in the South-West this January

With your eyes closed, you get absorbed in the driving heart-beat of the stomp-box, the eastern melodic rhythms of the guitar, the droning of the Didgeridoo, and then soaring above comes Nathan Kaye’s rich vocals. With your eyes open, you realise all of this is being skillfully woven by one person. And the word is spreading... People always rave about his innovative blend of beat-boxing (vocal drumming) and Slide-Didge (a trombone-like Didgeridoo).

As a multi-instrumentalist, he does human beat-boxing (vocal drums), plays 12 string guitar like its some kind of funky sitar, 6 string guitar & lap-steel slide at the same time as the Slide-Didge (which is an innovative Trombone-like Didgeridoo made from timber) and stomp-box. But it isn't his obsession with instruments that has attracted so much attention to his show. It is his heart-felt voice, lyrics and engaging, honest conversational style & unexpected sense of humour, that people are drawn to.

Ideas have changed the world & musicians like Nathan are our modern traveling bards, they’re going around telling stories with sound & bringing messages about our world, self-respect & respecting others. Music in that way, when its from the heart, is very exciting & dynamic. Nathan’s multi-instrumental performance is energetic, powerful, honest & has a lot of integrity, it’s extremely welcoming & ageless. It’s original, it’s Australian & it’s now.
LIVE: If you were to blend JOHN BUTLER, THE TEA PARTY, MICHAEL FRANTI and, well, THE UMBILICAL BROTHERS, you’d get something that resembles a Nathan Kaye live performance…

Last January The Waifs performed at Leeuwin as part of the huge Union OF Soul WA tour with John Butler. In 2009 they return again to headline the Leeuwin Australia Day weekend concert!

The founding artists of Australia’s independent music scene, The Waifs are honored to have America’s leading lady of independence, Ani DiFranco and her band along for the ride.

The Waifs have been one of West Australia's most loved and appreciated bands over their 20 year history. Building their fan base the hard way, playing every corner of the country, earning respect of peers and fans alike for their tenacity and drive to do things their own way. From the back streets of sleepy towns in WA, to an internationally loved, multiple ARIA Award winning multiple platinum selling act, (their latest release Sun Dirt Water now also platinum), The Waifs have paved the way for Australian independent artists to be able to forge successful careers outside of the major label rules.

The Waifs started their career by touring WA from town to town in the back of a Toyota Hiace van, booking their own shows, promoting their own shows and releasing their own CDs. Each night they would package their CDs in post packs and send them out to record stores and fans alike. The only person who they could look to for inspiration for forming the true independent model in Australia was the inimitable Ani DiFranco.  Tickets $60 adults / $10 children under 14 plus booking fee.

Check out Matt McHugh's solo project - Matt McHugh and the Black Bird this February!

Usually known for his award winning group, The Beautiful Girls, Matt's new album, titled Seperatista is a collective project with a band made up of players from the Sydney jazz scene.

He reckons it's definitely not the end of the Beautiful Girls. So why'd he feel the need to have a side-project fling?

"The short answer is that I had a bunch of songs laying around that I thought were good. And they definitely wouldn't make it on the next Beautiful Girls record because they were just based around an acoustic guitar. And the next Beautiful Girls record will just be three piece electric. Not rock but not acoustic either. "

BURNING OF THE VINE CUTTINGS
Date: 7 November 2009 2009

Venue: Leeuwin Estate

The Burning of the Vine Cuttings at Leeuwin Estate Returns for 2009!

The BOTVC is an old European tradition which saw field workers enjoy an end-of-pruning bonfire, was a celebration which culminated in music, dance, song and wine, at the end of a hard season of toil.

Now in its ninth year, the BOTVC evening combines all the cameradie of ancient pruning celebrations with the fun of bonfire night, combining music, dance and fireworks, with good food and great wine.... and lots of additional fun for children. Fireworks and thousands of lightsticks and glowlights add to the mystique and festivity, as sparks fly from a huge bonfire created by Leeuwin fieldhands.

Local bands and entertainment complete the night along with plenty of food, wine and other drinks.

This event is a must-do for families on Saturday 7th November 2009.

Stay tuned for more info soon!
