Augusta – “the whales' first port of call

Each year Southern Right and Humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to breed in Australian waters – the first whales to stop, choose the idyllic Flinders Bay in Augusta, nestled in the south of the picturesque Margaret River region. Augusta is also unique because the whales come here to breed and this is one of the only places in the world where you can watch Southern Right and Humpback whales interact. Augusta is also special as the dramatic meeting point of the Southern and Indian oceans. Come and see these magnificent creatures in the pristine waters off Augusta from June to September each year. There are plenty of great look out points – the high powered binoculars at the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse are great whale spotting as is the top of the lighthouse tower. Alternatively, get up really close on a whale watching tour.

Venue: Various - See Below

Contact Details:

Folk and Blues

Folk Blues troubadour Jez Mead returns comes to Perth and the South West this July supported by the delightful Felicity Groom. Jez is constantly touring all over this wide brown land and this inspires and fills his music with a hypnotic sense of place and space.

He is deep and diverse in voice and word and his guitar style rises to whatever the song calls for. That can mean slapping it, tapping it, wringing it’s neck, caressing it , bending it, bashing it, tuning it weird, making it sway, swing, sing, strumming it, fingerpicking it, making it run, chasing it down and holding it gently to his heart. He can sing sweet about love gone wrong or holla and scream about the plight of drug tested spiders. He also has the odd pop notion and bangs his foot on a wooden box to drive the music on.

Jez has supported Midnight Oil, Angus and Julia Stone, the Waifs, The Beautiful Girls and Tex Perkins to name a few as well as playing many of the countries festivals including the East Coast Blues and Roots fest, Festival of the Sun, and Peats Ridge and Queenscliffe. He has 3 independently released albums distributed by Vitamin Records and is currently working on a fourth as well as an instrumental album.

Jez plays the following gigs in the South West:

Thurs 2nd – The Settlers Tavern, Margaret River, 8pm Fri 3rd – The Prince, Bunbury, 8pm Sat 4th – Dunsborough Tavern, Dunsborough,

Suburban Dreaming

Take a soul singer like Marvin Gaye, send him to Neil Young's farm for work experience, get him to jam with Levon Helm and the Band and then take him on a fishing trip with Paul Kelly and you'll have an idea of the Huckleberry Swedes.  Guitars, Banjo, Hammond Organ, Squeeze Box and great harmonies.

Huckleberry Swedes are a five piece outfit hailing from South Australia.  With BJ Barker on drums, Sam Willoughby on bass &vocals, Richard "The Judge" Coates on keyboards & accordion, Mark Elberg on guitars, banjo, mandolin & vocals and Troy Loakes on vocals & guitar. This band of experienced players have rightly developed a name as a great live act.

Sometimes alt Country, sometimes Soul, Huckleberry Swedes are artists with voices that join in the ups and downs of our time.  Songs about the love of fishing, pies, and sweethearts, songs of protest, underdog anthems and melancholic musings baked in a crust of roots, rock, folk, soul, Australiana and Americana. They’re a band that asks questions about who we are, and what our place is in the land.

The band’s live shows are delivered with an intense heart and soul that has seen them invited to spend the last year criss-crossing the Eastern States to perform at some of our finest music festivals, including Byron Bay Blues & Roots, Apollo Bay, Gympie Music Muster, Fuse, Tamworth and the Robe Village Fair, as well as performing their own tours.

Huckleberry Swedes are touring nationally to promote Suburban Dreaming,  their debut full length album produced by Midnight Oil's, Jim Moginie, which will be available from May 2009.

Venue: Prince of Wales Bunbury & Settlers Tavern

Sleeping Patterns

Jordie Lane will release his long awaited debut album, Sleeping Patterns, on Friday 12 June through Vitamin Records.
Co-produced by Jeff Lang and Tim Hall, Sleeping Patterns had been brewing in the subconscious of Jordie’s mind for four years, and eventually came to fruition in the winter of 2008. Recorded in little more than five days, the album is storytelling at its rawest, gutsiest, and most fragile.

Featuring guest performances by prominent roots artists Ashley Davies, Jeff Lang, Laura Jean, and Liz Stringer, Sleeping Patterns moves between finger pickin’ ballads, western tunes, rockin’ blues and the odd sea shanty. These are songs delivered with such beautiful imagery and wisdom that it’s hard to believe most tracks were written before Jordie had even turned 21.

Jordie has previously released two EPs Ill Communication (2005) and Lovers Ride (2006), and played countless live shows including several sold out performances at The Spiegeltent, The Port Fairy Folk Festival, and toured alongside Loudon Wainwright lll, Gotye, Jeff Lang, and Kate Miller Heidke. Highly regarded as a solo performer, Jordie also collaborated with Canadian songwriter Tracy McNeil under the moniker of Fireside Bellows, and they are still receiving accolades today for their 2008 release, No Time To Die.

Don’t miss Jordie Wednesday 29 July – Prince of Wales Hotel, Bunbury and Thursday 30 July – The Settlers Tavern, Margaret River

An inspiring true story of hope, courage and love..

In August 2000, Russian submarine The Kursk mysteriously vanished before its wreckage was soon discovered on the bottom of the ocean.

This extraordinary play by Sasha Janowicz reveals the amazing true story of the ill-fated submarine.

As the brave sailors anxiously sit trapped 80 metres beneath the sea, their rescuers work frantically on the surface.  Admiral Popov, their leader, is under extreme pressure to succeed at all costs - if he fails, there could be a nuclear disaster in the Atlantic.

Familes are also desperate for news of their loved ones  - a young woman can but hope and pray for her sailor as he writes her love letters from inside The Kursk.

Compelling from beginning to end, The Kursk is an epic thriller, an intriguing mystery and a love story for the ages.

See it at the Margaret River Cultural Centre on Wednesday 29th July from 8pm.

"Watch Me Set My Strange Sun You Bloody Choir" Australian Tour!

For the past 13 years Melbourne band Augie March have achieved what very few bands, indeed artists in any field in Australia, can claim to have achieved. While steadily building a loyal and ferocious fan base, they have simultaneously sustained critical acclaim and commercial viability.

Augie March will don full regalia and take the garden of forking paths into their own schizophrenic past where minotaur's with broken hearts hold up the front bar, manic pixies bore repeatedly into the necks of corporate swindlers, and the human condition gets ridden roughshod by rabid monkeys into an unthinkable tomorrow. Plus there may be a love song or two. Watch Me Set My Strange Sun You Bloody Choir will be a trip down memory lane for Augie fans because all four albums will have an equal showing on this grand tour.

For their final large-scale tour for 2009, Augie March will be hitting the bitumen in the company of Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe of the phenomenal outfit The Drones. Great friends for many years and fellow travelers on the arduous, terribly unfashionable, and yet rewarding long road. It is a dream pairing for anyone who likes their coffee dark and strong with a dash of firewater. Both bands have seen the snake eat its own tail more than a few times and have forged on with a gritted tooth smile regardless. In an acoustic setting these chaps will shine every night.

Apart from the odd festival this will be the last chance to see Augie March doing what they do before they take a well-earned breather. In their time off there may well be a solo album or two and some time given to projects in film, photography, claymation and other interests. In the meantime we invite you to one of the tours of 2009, from your own country, no evidence required, no gimmicks in the songbox, Augie March.

Doors: 9pm Special guests: Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe from The Drones

Take the Challenge!

The Bibbulmun Track Foundation is now recruiting for new teams to compete in its annual Mountain Designs Bibbulmun Team Challenge, to be held between the 8th of October and the 8th November.

The Challenge involves sixteen teams battling it out in team-building, mind-bending and physically-demanding activities over four heats along Western Australia’s Bibbulmun Track and is ideal for corporations wanting to enhance communication and problem-solving skills amongst employees.

The event has grown in popularity since the first Challenge in 2002, and has become a “must do” for some organisations who sign up each year including Bankwest, National Bank, Department of Environment & Conservation, and more. 2008 participant Chris Nutt summed it up neatly as “well organised, well executed, and good fun”.

Also able to participate are social, outdoor or sporting clubs or even groups of friends looking for an intense and fulfilling adventure experience - Word has spread, and an ‘all ladies’ team of friends from the Eastern States is vying for the Challenge Champion crown this year!

Each four-day heat covers approximately 60kms. In addition to the adventure challenges in the bush, participants will camp out and bushwalk with full backpacks for 15km per day.

“Although teams are self-sufficient, training and support will be provided.” said Event Manager and Lead Guide, Steve Sertis “The Challenge is not about winning, it’s about finding out about yourself, testing your limits and appreciating your environment.”

The 1000km Bibbulmun Track, which stretches from Perth to Albany is regarded as one of the world’s great long distance walk trails. It winds its way through some of the most spectacular natural areas of Australia’s South West and is the perfect location for the innovative, nature-based event. The Challenge is also a major fundraiser for The
Bibbulmun Track Foundation with all proceeds dedicated to the ongoing sustainability of the Track.

BURNING OF THE VINE CUTTINGS
Date: 7 November 2009 2009

Venue: Leeuwin Estate

The Burning of the Vine Cuttings at Leeuwin Estate Returns for 2009!

The BOTVC is an old European tradition which saw field workers enjoy an end-of-pruning bonfire, was a celebration which culminated in music, dance, song and wine, at the end of a hard season of toil.

Now in its ninth year, the BOTVC evening combines all the cameradie of ancient pruning celebrations with the fun of bonfire night, combining music, dance and fireworks, with good food and great wine.... and lots of additional fun for children. Fireworks and thousands of lightsticks and glowlights add to the mystique and festivity, as sparks fly from a huge bonfire created by Leeuwin fieldhands.

Local bands and entertainment complete the night along with plenty of food, wine and other drinks.

This event is a must-do for families on Saturday 7th November 2009.

Stay tuned for more info soon!

Augusta = Adventure!

Western Australia’s biggest adventure event has found a new home base for the Anaconda Adventure Race come November 8th 2009. And it’s Augusta!

There are beaches ready for exploration, rocky headlands and islands untouched by others and forests and bushland with only you and a few wallabies setting the trail... what better place can you imagine for an adventure race like this. Throw in a bustling little town alive with activity and the stage is set for one super adventure.

The new course for the Anaconda Adventure Race will have the athletes amongst us frothing at the mouth and ready to race hard whilst the more recreational competitors will be carrying their cameras so they can remember the views. Rest assured, the new course is very much up to scratch.

The thing that hasn’t changed with the new venue is the atmosphere and camaraderie of the event, the expo, the entertainment, the familiarisation days and the support. Let the friendships and enthusiasm continue, the good times and hours of training pay off amongst a growing group of like-minded people who are brought together in search of an adventure - and then sharing a brew afterwards.

HOLY COW!  The World’s Largest International Art Event “CowParade” Is Coming To Town!

Have you ever picked up a hitch hiking cow? Or spotted a bright blue cow sitting on a park bench, or perhaps one with a surfboard under its arm checking out the surf? No? Well you could soon! If you haven’t "herd", the internationally acclaimed CowParade, the most successful public art event in the world is setting its sights on our region!

CowParade organisers, the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association (AMRTA), are excited to have secured the rights to host the event. “Over 500 cities worldwide have applied for the rights to the event but only 50 cities have been successful in their application in nearly a decade of the event’s history,” AMRTA CEO Francine Errico said.

“Host cities have included prestigious places like Chicago, New York City, London, Tokyo, Prague and Paris and we hope to add the Margaret River region to its glamorous list!”

So what is all the fuss about? Simply, the cow is a universally beloved animal. The cow represents different things to different people around the world-she’s sacred, she’s historical, she connects us to our past-but the common feeling is one of affection. There is something magical about the cow that transcends throughout the world. She simply makes everyone smile.

But what is CowParade? Well a whole bunch of life-size fibre glass cows are hauled in and left in the hands of our talented local artists.

Once the cows are painted, sculpted, morphed and more they will be placed at various locations across the Cape including wineries, beaches, local businesses, iconic attractions and town centres. The cows will be around from March to June and plenty of people will travel far and wide to see them. The culmination of the four month event is a gala auction of the cows, where the proceeds will go to selected charities and regional projects.

Local businesses are invited to get involved by either sponsoring a cow and/or hosting a cow which will provide up to seven months of intrastate, interstate and international promotion and lots of potential customers to their doorsteps wanting to see the cows (there are 50,000 CowParade followers around the world).
