Surfing

Over 135 km of coastline and 75 breaks to choose from

Who needs theme parks when Mother Nature provides the best playground on Earth!? Surfing is synonymous with the Margaret River Region, known worldwide for its powerful surf that has sculpted the styles of the best surfers to have come out of Western Australia.

There’s a wave here for everyone, from gentle shore breaks for beginners to perfect barrels where local legends Taj Burrows and Jake Patterson honed their styles. Hire a board or let one of the locals give you a lesson.

Each year in autumn, the world’s best surfers descend upon the Margaret River Region to compete in the Margaret River Pro as part of the World Surfing League (WSL) Championship Tour. You can watch the action unfold at the free spectator’s event held at Surfers Point and be part of the many satellite events including live music and kids activities.

Experience the surf culture year-round (without even getting wet) at the WA Surf Gallery, Western Australia’s first and only official collection of surfing memorabilia ideally located in one of the nation’s most iconic surfing towns, Yallingup, and also conveniently hosted at the beautiful Aravina Estate, where you can also enjoy a world-class lunch and award-winning wines. Surfing has long been a drawcard for working holidaymakers who often come for the surf and never leave. Listen to this podcast to hear about the consuming passions of the region’s winemakers whose love of surfing and wine has led them to call the Margaret River Region home.
