Ask anyone in town where to find the best burger, and it’s a sure bet Normal Van will be on the list.

Ex-pat Rob worked in some of the best restaurants in Canada before making Margaret River his home, and has turned his talents to serving up some of the best North American style food this side of the equator.

His food truck Normal Van can be found around town during the week (check the Instagram page for details), with each item on the menu thoughtfully prepared, often from scratch, from the hot sauce to the potato brioche buns.

Passionate about South West produce and eating darn tasty food, his new YouTube cooking channel Normal Days Off promises to teach us how to make some of his favourite meals at home, using chef-tricks to amp up the goodness.

When not in the kitchen, Rob can be found enjoying the Margaret River Region and lucky for us he has shared some of his favourites.

Where’s your favourite beach?

Redgate for sure! It’s also the outlet for some of the best parts of the Cape to Cape, has calm waters for swimming & waves for a little surfing. Definite crowd pleaser!

2

Where do you always take your visitors?

3

Top 3 local food experiences?

Glenarty Road, for in my opinion it showcases the best of what the South West is all about, being food, wine, agriculture, and ambiance without all the fluff.

Pearls Bar, at the top of Margaret River town with three proprietors that genuinely care about making (and delivering!) the best cocktails and honest bar snacks possible. I also feel they are part of an exciting new generation of hospitality in Margaret River that is helping breathe new life into the town.

Morries is most definitely a Margaret River institution everyone needs to check out (and for good reason).

And Bella Napoli makes the best pizza.

4

Best fun to be had in the region without spending a cent?

Any trail of the Cape to Cape, you see what the coast is all about while letting conversation and thoughts easily flow.

5

Favourite time of year?

Spring for sure, being the flower season. It also has the best rain to sun ratio (I love rain).

6

Best place to watch the sunset?

Controversial, but I like watching it over any part of the Wadandi Track, it’s something about the silhouettes of gnarled trees against any coloured sky and the sounds of the forest I’m always down with!

7

Best places to pick up local produce and shop like a chef?

Gathered Organics along Wallcliffe Rd bring together the best produce from passionate organic farmers in the region in one convenient location! I’ve met many new producers just through them!

Margaret River Farmers Market is great too, our favourite growers are Gunyulgup Farm, Marios Garden & Barrabup Organics.

8

The best local drink match to a Normal Van meal?

Dormilonas Orange Wine & Skinnie Sauvignon Blanc with fried chicken, or Beerfarms Pale Ale with a burger.

9

You can’t leave the Margaret River Region without…

Going to Margaret River Bakery. Perfect road trip stop before heading out. Just get in before the (well deserved) line starts!
