The Margaret River Region is home to some of the world’s most beautiful examples of the chardonnay variety, with its perfect grape-growing climate and highly skilled winemakers. Featuring wines combining style, elegance and finesse, we can’t think of a better place to delve into the delicious world of chardonnay. To get you started, this extensive Chardonnay Trail features some of the icons and the lesser-known names, all spectacular in their own right.

Please note: Do yourself a favour and attempt the trail over multiple days. Linger at the charming cellar doors, have a leisurely lunch and don’t rush the experience. Make sure to toss the coin over who will be the designated driver before you start tasting, or let someone else take care of the transport for you.

Flametree Wines

Located at the northern gateway to the Margaret River wine region, Flametree’s Hamptons-inspired beachy cellar door is the perfect setting to taste their highly acclaimed and awarded SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay. Their chardonnay has taken trophies at Australia’s top wine shows and has been listed in the top 100 wines by James Halliday. Lovely lifted fruit with hints of delicate savoury notes from solids, giving this wine greater complexity and overall purity.

Wise Wine

Wise Wine is a must-stop on the Chardonnay Trail — not just for the panoramic ocean views and inviting cellar door, but for its standout expressions of Margaret River chardonnay. The 2023 Barrel Select Chardonnay, recently praised by Ray Jordan, showcases the elegance and structure the region is known for, with exceptional depth and finesse. For collectors and chardonnay lovers alike, Wise also offers a rare opportunity to explore back vintages dating back to 2004, a vertical tasting experience you won’t find just anywhere in the region.

Rivendell Winery Estate

Visit Rivendell’s beautiful cellar door in Yallingup to taste their outstanding 2023 Chardonnay, ranking number nine out of sixty-one in its vintage, as awarded by Huon Hooke from The Real Review. This refined chardonnay features a light yellow hue with a smoky, struck-flint aroma, layered with grapefruit tones. A must-try for wine enthusiasts exploring the region.

Aravina Estate

Stop for lunch at Aravina Estate‘s beautiful lawns, and while you’re there, explore their fantastic wines. Crafted in their state-of-the-art facility and bottled on site, they capture the essence of their single vineyard.

Their Wildwood Ridge Reserve Chardonnay is made from the best handpicked grapes, representing the pinnacle of their winemaking expertise. With aging potential of up to 15 years, this elegant wine showcases a pale straw colour with a hint of green. Lifted aromas of grapefruit, yellow nectarine and blanched cashews complemented by subtle oak, adding depth.

Credaro Family Estate

Located 10 minutes from Dunsborough, the Credaro cellar door offers breathtaking views of Wildwood Valley. All fruit used comes from their own vineyards across the Margaret River Region. Try their Kinship Chardonnay 2025, which combines a generous fruit profile with naturally succulent fresh citrus acidity, or their award-winning 1000 Crowns Chardonnay 2024, which is a wine full of layers and length.

Windows Estate

A true labour of love, the story of Windows Estate is a testament to where passion and hard work can lead. Co-founder and Winemaker Chris Davies was recently shortlisted for Viticulturist of the Year at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards, so you know you’re in good hands. Releasing around 600 bottles per vintage, their Petit Lot Chardonnay variety has not received less than 95/100 from the Halliday Companion, heralded for its pristine, pure line of acidity and detail.

Island Brook Estate Vineyard and Chalets

Island Brook Estate’s property team hand-picks and whole bunch presses their Gin Gin clone chardonnay to preserve the delicate flavour within the fruit, delivering a fresh and succulent drop. Another highlight is their range of magnificent chardonnay blends, like the Gold Medal Winning 2024 Verdelho Semillon Chardonnay. Their on-site accommodation is the perfect base for a weekend of wine exploration, as it is conveniently located in the centre of the Margaret River wine region.

Domaine Naturaliste

Just off Caves Road, Domaine Naturaliste is a must if you love chardonnay before you head further south along the Chardonnay Trail. Depending on your preference, taste your way through their lightly oaked, fruit-driven styles and a voluptuous old-world style made from the acclaimed local Gin Gin clone, or go for a style with laser-like purity and acid made from Dijon clones.

Cherubino

An essential stop for chardonnay lovers, Cherubino is the label of award-winning winemaker and grape grower Larry Cherubino, who has earned an outstanding reputation both nationally and internationally for his exceptional chardonnays. A couple of years ago, the winery was honoured with the prestigious IWSC International White Wine Producer of the Year award, alongside the many accolades their chardonnays continue to receive year after year. Enjoy a tasting of chardonnays from the Cherubino and Cherubino Ovale ranges, perfectly paired with antipasto or cheese boards.

Lenton Brae Estate

Lenton Brae’s Wilyabrup Chardonnay has been going strong for 39 vintages in a row – one of the longest running in the region. It’s a true classic Margaret River style, with elegance, texture and that signature Wilyabrup charm. The family-owned winery combines both the history and future of Chardonnay in the region – always evolving, but staying true to place. Stopping in at their friendly cellar door is a great way to discover a hidden gem – relaxed, welcoming and all about the wine.

Churchview Estate

Churchview Estate is well worth the quick detour to Metricup. Operating a certified organic vineyard, they pride themselves on cultivating, crafting and cherishing the land, the grapes, and the wines. Churchview aim to craft each bottle as a reflection of the site, and to speak about the vintage, the climate, and the array of flavour profiles each season brings.

You’ll find a variety of clones and styles of chardonnay to suit any palate and budget. Bring your own picnic or select from a range of locally sourced charcuterie offered at the cellar door, share a bottle of your favourite chardonnay and enjoy the view.

Pierro

Just down the road from Churchview Estate you’ll find Pierro, who very humbly boasts a chardonnay that exemplifies the terroir of the region. Since 1986, the chardonnay style found at Pierro has been racking up accolades internationally. Wine Writer and Critic Jeremy Oliver says of their chardonnay “Pierro is one of the few Australian wineries that could claim to have established a trend that many others have followed… they have crafted a chardonnay of not only monumental power but of simultaneously smooth and silky delivery”.

Vasse Felix

A little further down Caves Road lies the historical centre of Margaret River’s wine industry at Vasse Felix, the region’s founding estate established in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity. Your visit comes with the opportunity to taste one of the region’s most coveted bottles. Their iconic Heytesbury Chardonnay is one of the most awarded chardonnays in the world. Perched beside Margaret River’s oldest vineyard, the Estate offers wine tastings, an award-winning restaurant, an art gallery, tours and more.

Howard Park

From rich and oaky, lean and mineral to sparkling blanc de blanc, you’ll find chardonnay in all shapes and forms at Howard Park.

Their acclaimed Allingham is made from a selection from the best blocks of chardonnay that grow on the south-facing slopes of their Allingham vineyard in Karridale. Exceptional fruit, traditional winemaking methods and ample maturation in French oak deliver a layered, flavoursome and complex wine.

Passel Estate

Passel Estate is a family-owned winery with nature conservation at its heart. Visitors can enjoy a range of guided tasting experiences, a portion of the proceeds of which go directly towards the nature and wildlife conservation program at the estate. Their sustainably produced, single-vineyard chardonnay is acclaimed for its perfume, elegant structure and fabulous typicity.

A museum chardonnay is also available to taste for a small additional tasting fee; go for it!

Allegedly, Evoi Wines started with a dream and two barrels of chardonnay. The boutique winery has come a long way, with Halliday awarding their 2016 Reserve Chardonnay 98 points and naming it among his “Best of Region”.

Not just the wines are spectacular. Overlooking a tranquil lake on one side and the vineyard on the other, the inviting cellar door features a spacious lawn area with a children’s playground and a comfortable shaded picnic table.

McHenry Hohnen

With three biodynamic vineyards located around the region, the McHenry Hohnen cellar door provides an education on how different growing conditions and regional terroirs affect the variety of award-winning chardonnays they produce. See and touch the different soils that the vines grow in and taste the range from Hazel’s Vineyard, Burnside Vineyard and Calgardup Brook Vineyard. Xanadu Estate

Moving slightly further south, you will find Xanadu Estate, another option for that quintessential Margaret River lunch with a view of the vines. Every palate and price point is catered for across Xanadu’s Circa 77, Vinework, Stevens Road, Reserve and their namesake Xanadu range, so no matter how you take your chardonnay there is something for everyone.

Amato Vino

Find Amato Vino in the unique and historic The Witch and Windmill building in Witchcliffe to sample their chardonnay and other lo-fi wines made from a wide range of exotic varieties. Wild fermented with a touch of fresh oak and time on toasty lees to bring out the textural character, unfined and unfiltered – the vineyard and vintage truly express themselves in the glass.

Leeuwin Estate

The last stop on your chardonnay discovery, but by no means least, Leeuwin Estate will treat you to one of the most famous wines in Australia.
