Like the beginning and end of something much greater, the fresh waters of the Margaret River flow through land, forest and out to sea, sharing life and vitality to all who encounter it.

It’s a magic felt in the earth and the people. The experiences are as varied and unique as the inhabitants. But that’s the common thread in Margaret River: a connection to place and a contribution to the culture, no matter your background. It’s a land of character, filled with characters. Here, legacy wine producers rub shoulders with salty surfers, tree changers, nature lovers, enterprising families and artists.

Visitors come to grasp a slice of this life, but many stay to add their own thread to the intricate tapestry. Trickle, current, vine, forest, rivermouth, ocean.

The Margaret River / Wooditjup Bilya

The Margaret River is a vital waterway, a 60-kilometre-long source around which much life and abundance occur. It passes through the Margaret River townsite itself, where it’s deeply loved for the verdant bush that it brings, the thriving wildlife, walk trails, waterfalls and picnic spots. To the west, the river grows and widens as it reaches its River Mouth, just north of Prevelly, creating a natural border within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

Wooditjup Bilya is a place of immense cultural significance for the Wadandi People. It’s named after the magic man, Wooditj who created the river in the Nyitting (cold times when the land was soft). The river was of vital importance to Wadandi People for camping, hunting, foraging and fishing, and as a focal point for traditional ceremonial activity. Today, Aboriginal people continue to protect and conserve the ecological importance and spiritual significance of the river. (Courtesy of the Undalup Association.)

Gnarabup Beach

Despite bordering Margaret River’s most famous surf breaks, Gnarabup Beach (just south of Prevelly) is an oasis of calm waters, boating, fishing, paddling and snorkelling. It’s certainly the locals’ drop-in spot for their daily swim, walking the dog or popping down for a coffee and a bite at the ever-popular White Elephant Café. The swell of the west coast is hampered by an outer reef, which creates lagoon-like conditions at the beach, sheltered on one side by a spectacular limestone headland. A walking trail over the top gives vivid views of the whole area.

Surfers Point

When you think of surfing in Margaret River, you should be thinking of Surfers Point. The World Surf League’s Margaret River Pro is held there every year. Name your favourite Australian or international surfer, and we guarantee they have gotten wet at Surfers Point. In addition to its desirable conditions, the Point is arguably the most popular sunset spot in the area. A grassy hill lies high above the water, making a natural grandstand to sit and watch the surfers (or when the wind is in, kite and windsurfers), the sun setting, or to enjoy a picnic from a local food truck.

Their stories tell of dispossession, hard work, resilience, perseverance and changing ways of life.
